ACCELERATED RESOLUTION THERAPY (ART):
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?ART is a type of therapy that helps people feel better after stressful or painful experiences. It helps the brain store memories in a calmer way so they do not cause strong emotional reactions anymore.
How is ART different from regular talk therapy?ART does not focus on talking in detail about the past. Instead, it uses gentle eye movements or tapping and imagination to help the brain change how it reacts to upsetting memories.
What happens in an ART session? You sit comfortably as your therapist guides the session using verbal prompts and gentle eye movements or tapping, while thinking about a memory you want help with. The therapist guides you step by step. You stay aware, in control, and can stop at any time.
What kinds of concerns can ART help with?ART is often used for trauma and PTSD. It can also help with anxiety, panic, fears, grief, stress, sleep problems, and some types of depression.
How many sessions will I need? Many people feel improvement in just a few sessions. Some notice changes after one session, while others need more. Your therapist will check in with you to decide what feels right.
How does ART help memories feel less upsetting?ART helps your brain change the pictures or feelings connected to a memory. The memory stays, but for many who use ART, it no longer brings strong fear, sadness, or physical stress.
How do I know if ART is right for me?ART may be helpful if you feel stuck with upsetting memories, strong emotional reactions, or stress that does not go away. It also is helpful if you want a therapy that does not require a lot of talking about the details of the past.
Do I have to relive my trauma or talk about everything out loud? No. You do not need to share details you are not comfortable with. ART focuses on how the memory feels in your body and mind, not on telling the full story.
What Can I Expect After an ART Session? After a session, people often notice changes right away or over the next few days.
You may experience: feeling calmer and lighter, feeling less reactive when thinking about the event, feeling tired or mentally relaxed, new insights or different thoughts about the memory. Some people feel very normal afterward, while others feel a bit tired. Both are okay. It is common for the brain to keep processing after the session.
You do not usually need homework, and there is nothing special you have to do to “make ART work.”
